15 July 2010 - 12-Week Challenge Winners

On July 3rd the 12 week challenge came to an end, and as predicted we had a 70% drop off rate. But those who did complete the challenge did an amazing job, with 3 people who stood out as our top three. We chose our top three based on a combination of physical and mental changes. We were looking for those clients who could change themselves more than just physically. Changing yourself physically is actually quite easy, but making changes to your attitude, eating and your lifestyle so that the physical changes will last is the hardest obstacle to overcome. To eat regular nutritious meals day in and day out, to resist the urge to splurge when all around you are, is very very difficult. To achieve a great body takes more than just hard workouts, it takes commitment, focus, determination and sacrifice. Which is why we had a 70% drop off rate, but that is not a problem because some people just take longer to actually 'get it'.

1 July 2010 - Holiday Time

Can you believe that it's July already? Where has the year gone? I have two things to look forward to this month, a: An actual holiday abroad for two whole weeks, b: The Tour de France begins on July 3rd. Now the holiday is obviously the highlight of my year, a chance to sit back, enjoy a few cold beers, top up the tan and generally take it easy........NOT!

15 June 2010 - Stop setting limits

On June 8th/9th and 12th various solo riders and teams began a journey of self discovery. They took their first pedal strokes on a journey that would define, empower and forever change them. They started the 'Race Across America' (RAAM), a 3000 mile journey from the west coast to the east coast. Their aim will be to finish in under 12 days, with the fastest completing the race in just a few hours longer than 8 days. The race has been run since the early 1980s and has seen many finish and just as many drop out. Can you imagine the training and self sacrifice that is required to just get to the start line? And then the commitment and belief in yourself to ride for for 22 hours a day for 8-12 days straight? All while suffering incredible saddle sores, muscle strain, hallucinations, hunger, mouth fungus and a whole host of other potential problems!

1 June 2010 - Peak Fitness with Spinning®

I must congratulate all those who have done so well on the challenge, at the recent weigh-in we finally achieved some great results. I am now looking forward to the next one, so be sure to keep up the great work.I have noticed some amazing changes in quite a few of you, there is muscle showing through, strength is increasing and bodies looking smaller. One particular person who I must mention, as much for the embarrasment factor is Fiona Turner. She has had some amazing break-throughs in recent weeks, she is now doing full press-ups (no more knees for this lady), she is running faster, lifting heavier and looks amazing. If you need someone to inspire you then look no further, as I think she is totally awesome. Her weekly training contains an even mix of indoor and outdoor bootcamp classes and also a few Spinning classes. Well done Fiona!

15 May 2010 - Challenge Update

I was hoping to start this newsletter with amazing tales of how well all the current 12-week challenge participants are doing, but unfortunately I am immensely disappointed. I made the challenge to see how, by making a change and eating correctly and exercising intensely you could change your body. It was supposed to be about taking the chance to get control of your nutrition and training to make a positive change to your physique, health and energy. But about 70% of participants have completely missed the point (30% have done extremely well, you know who you are). After reading through the food diaries and listening to conversations, a lot of you are still eating exactly the same way. During the last weigh-in a few participants were surprised that they did not get better results, but after reading their food diaries I can see why they didn't do well. One client in the first week of the challenge ate so much sugar that she must have kept Tate & Lyle in business, and she ran a marathon at the end of that week. Another client hadn't changed a thing about her nutrition for the whole first three weeks. Definitely not a good way to lose weight or load up for an endurance event!

1 May 2010 - Focus on your Challenge

I hope that you are training hard and the results are starting to show through. We are currently at the end of week three of the 12-week challenge, which is usually the time when people start to have cravings and doubts about whether they can do this. So whenever it starts to get a little difficult, or you start to have doubts, remind yourself of why you are doing the challenge. To achieve our goals we all need to keep focused on what it is that we want, whether it is to lose weight, burn fat, gain a six-pack etc. Think about how you will feel if you quit now. 12 weeks of good training and clean eating is actually a small sacrifice to make, but when you achieve your goals it will be worth it.

15 April 2010 - Good luck in the Challenge!

Last month I set a challenge to see who could make a dramatic and positive change to their body in 12 weeks, using consistent exercise and by following a structured nutrition plan. Well to say we were surprised by the response would be an understatement. We were expecting probably 15-20 people to accept the challenge, but over 60 of you have risen to the challenge. You have shown that you are ready to take a chance and spend the next 12 weeks working towards your perfect body.

1 April 2010 - Brighton Bootcamp Physique Challenge

Let me ask you, are you ready to make 2010 the year that you actually get into amazing shape? Have you finished with making excuses and are finally ready to take that step to success? Well, here is a challenge - spend 12 weeks exercising intensely 3-6 times per week, eat clean wholesome food that is high in protein and low in simple sugars and see what you can actually do when you make a commitment to yourself

15 March 2010 - Back to Bootcamp

In the last few newsletters I have given a few tips and hints on marathon training, but not this time! Now it is time to get back to what Brighton Bootcamp is all about, weight loss, fat burning and getting into great shape. Let me ask you a question, are you happy with what you see in the mirror? If you are not, then ask yourself this, what you are going to do about it? Do not procrastinate, but actually make a promise to yourself that NOW is the time to change, not tomorrow, not next week, but right NOW! Well I am going to make you a promise, that I will do whatever it takes to help get you guys into the best shape of your lives!

1 March 2010 - Marathon Training Part 4

First of all I would like to thank everybody who attended our Spinning open day on Saturday 27th February. It was an amazing day full of energy and joy. We were riding to raise funds for BLESMA, the British Limbless Ex-Service Men's Association, in honour of 2LT Jonathan Carlos Bracho-Cooke who was killed in action in Iraq in 2007. If you have not already made a donation, please do so here

15 February 2010 - Marathon Training Part 3
I sometimes wonder what it is that drives you guys to exercise - is it for fitness, weight loss, to look better, marathon training, for your health or is it a combination of things? We all have our reasons, with some being quite personal and some quite general. But the most important thing to remember is that whatever reason you have, keep it fun and keep it in perspective. What I mean is, do not become obsessed and start making exercise an unhealthy addiction. Exercise should always be a balanced part of your life; yes it is great to enjoy exercising but remember that there are so many other things in life to enjoy as well. If you are feeling stressed out exercise can often help, but on some occasions it can actually make you feel worse. So do not be afraid to miss a workout if you feel you need a break. Exercise is only good for you when it is kept in perspective. This is even more important to remember if you are training for an event (Brighton Marathon), because obsessive training can lead to burnout and overtraining.
1 February 2010 - Marathon Training part 2
What an exciting month it has been - our new Suunto Fitness Solution is going down a storm. So much so that many of you have even bought your own belts, which shows me that you take your fitness seriously. We also sell heart rate monitors at competitive prices for those of you who like to train on your own or are training for a marathon and like to train in the correct heart rate zone. Please contact us for details and prices.
15 January 2010 - Marathon Training part 1
Wow the snow is relentless and unfortunately due to the severe weather we have had to cancel some of the outdoor classes. This is a decision we did not take lightly, as we take your fitness very seriously. Any time we have to cancel classes we will always offer you alternative sessions.
1 January 2010 - Suunto Fitness Solution Arrives!
2009 is now behind us and with it all our successes and failures, 2010 is a new year full of promise and hope. How many of you started 2009 with grand plans to get into great shape, maybe you started a new exercise regime and made some amazing changes. But then how many of you allowed yourselves to slip back into the same habits and lifestyle. As we enter 2010 are you really where you want to be with your fitness or are you exactly where you were a year ago? Well let me set you a challenge, make this year the year when you achieve all your goals, when you actually get into great shape instead of just talking about it. Please do not be one of those people who promises great changes but then lacks the courage to follow through. You only have one life so do not waste a day of it wishing for great shape and fitness, get off your butts and do it now!
15 December 2009 - Christmas is Coming
Christmas is almost here and boy, am I looking forward to the break. This past year Diana and I have been working extremely hard to make Brighton Bootcamp a success and so far so good. Our goal has always been to run a fitness business that is professional, informative, friendly, affordable and gets great results. I welcome any feedback, good or bad so that we can continue to improve, so please email us with your comments.
1 December 2009 - Suunto Fitness Solution
Wow!The weather recently has been atrocious, which has made the outdoor Bootcamp classes even more challenging than normal. A huge pat on the back to all of you who have been braving the wind and rain to get your exercise kick - well done! The weather has been harsh but if you are committed to your fitness, then it should never be an issue. But to all you fairweather Bootcampers don't forget that we have a studio where we run indoor Bootcamp and Spinning classes(Indoor cycling). Both workouts can help you to become fitter, leaner and stronger, so if the weather is putting you off then try one of our indoor classes. We will even let you have the first one free.
15 November 2009 - 5 Steps to a Great Shape
So have you got all your Christmas events planned? Is there one special event that you need to look great for? Whenever there is  a big event planned, we all want to look our best, to turn heads and to stand out from the crowd. So whether it is a works do, family get together, Christmas Eve/New Years Eve party or something else then now is the time to turn up the heat on your workouts. Instead of panicking about fitting into your best party clothes, make a commitment and plan to look amazing this Christmas.
1 November 2009 - Preparing for Christmas
It's eight weeks to Christmas, but for some the overindulgence starts in four. From December 1st to January 2nd all fitness and sensible nutrition seems to go out the window. Then you have the New Year resolutions which are broken within two weeks. But it doesn't have to be that way, December can be the month that you improve your fitness. Make a commitment to yourself to be the fittest, strongest and healthiest you can by ..........
15 October 2009 - Spinning
Well our Open Day went with a bang and was very successful, with all attendees leaving on a high. The Spinning classes were brilliant, culminating with the 90 minute ride which was a blast. Before the 90 minute ride a few people doubted their ability to last, but they were amazed at how strong they felt throughout the ride. The smiles on everybody's faces at the end was a picture to behold. Thank you to all who made the day very special indeed, and especially to those who made contributions to St Dunstan's - we raised over £300 for them.
1 October 2009 - Brighton Bootcamp Open Day
Well, just a couple of days to go until our Open Day at HQ, and boy are we excited. Our new Spinning bikes are looking great and really add something special to the studio. The classes are filling up very fast, with some already completely full. Remember that if you plan to attend then we advise you to book now to guarantee a place. Each person who attends an Open Day class will receive a free goody bag, free entry into our prize draw and be entitled to a 10% discount off all indoor courses and sessions purchased on the day.  And if you fancy making a donation to St Dunstan's in appreciation of all this fun, you can do it on the day or on our fundraising page.  Our aim is to help as many people get into great shape as possible, so even if you are not booked into a class then please come along to chat about how we can help you get into shape.
15 September 09 - Hard Work
This will come as no surprise to those of you who know me - I do not beat around the bush when it comes to fitness and health. No gloss, no fluff and definitely no bull.  So believe me when I tell you that when it comes to your fitness and nutrition there are no shortcuts. There are no pills, potions or secrets to the body of your dreams, just hard work and great nutrition. You and you alone can decide whether you are a success or not, so make today the day that you decide to succeed. No more excuses, no more procrastination, no more junk food and no more weak flabby bodies.
1 September 2009 - Spinning at Brighton Bootcamp!
Here at Bootcamp HQ we are all excited.......! We have just ordered 13 Star Trac Spinning bikes, so that we can add Spinning classes to our expanding timetable. For those of you that do not know, Spinning is indoor cycling with pumping music and loads of attitude. It is the most fun that you can have cycling indoors, it was the first of its kind and is still the best.
15 August 2009 - Walking the Walk
I have met hundreds if not thousands of people over the years who want to get into great shape and the majority actually are passionate about achieving results. But there are a number of people who come to me for help and advice who are "desperate" to get into shape.  They talk the talk, tell me they will do whatever it takes, eat right and train hard. They say they are committed to changing, to being the best they can be, but when the time comes, they do not show up for workouts, they eat badly and they make excuses. In other words they do not walk the walk! As a trainer who is passionate about helping others to achieve great results, I find this very upsetting. I am committed to giving every client my best effort and commitment to enable them to achieve the results that they desire. But when that effort and commitment is not reciprocated, I take it very personally. Maybe I am just too sensitive, but I believe that when a trainer takes on a client they should give 100% energy and effort to help their client achieve their goals, which should be matched by the client. So why do some people fall by the wayside?
1 August 2009 - What type of person are you?
I often wonder what type of person reads my newsletters - are they in shape and looking for an extra bit of advice or are they completely out of shape and need help? When I am in Borders looking at fitness magazines (by the way I look at both men's and women's fitness magazines) I notice that people buying the fitness magazines are usually in shape, but the people buying diet magazines are usually out of of shape. I have this theory that the people buying the fitness magazines are usually proactive with their fitness and health and are trying to gain further inspiration and advice. But the people buying the diet magazines are usually looking for a quick fix. Now, who reads my newsletter? Is it the fitness enthusiast or someone looking for the quick fix?
15 July 2009 - Welcome to Rick
First of all I would like to welcome Rick Goodchild to the Brighton Bootcamp team. He is going to be running our six-week courses on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. He brings a wealth of experience, having worked at a local gym for over ten years teaching circuits, spinning and gym routines. He will be a great asset to the team and he is very excited to help you guys get into phenomenal shape.
1 July 2009 - Brighton Marathon
Last week the first Brighton Marathon 2010 opened up for entry, and quite a few Bootcampers have already entered, myself included. But what does it take to run a marathon? For those of you who don't know it is 26.2 miles or 42.2 kms - a mighty long way, but with the right approach to training and nutrition is very doable.
15 June 2009 - You Guys Rock!
I've just got back from my Saturday Bootcamp class, and all I can say is "wow!" Today all my clients seemed to be working on a whole new level, they rocked. I get a lot of satisfaction when I see people coming to my workouts and just killing it, and today they did. I must mention a few people who stood out, Elaine C, as always, puts her heart and soul into every workout, Lynsey B who has lost 7 pounds in just two weeks and pushed herself to a new level (she is my new hero), Ellena B and Anna S who ran their hearts out and in the meantime impressed me immensly with their drive. Of course everybody else who has not been mentioned, you all rock.
1 June 2009 - HQ Opens!
Today is a very exciting day for us here at Brighton Bootcamp, as we have just opened our new HQ. This is where we will be running all our six week courses and personal training. We have a large matted area for circuits, six spinning bikes, two treadmills, one cross trainer and one stepper. We also have a large selection of free weights, benches, exercise balls, kettlebells, medicine balls, resistance tubes, a punch bag, boxing gloves and mitts and a cable crossover machine which can be used for a variety of exercises. So with all this kit we can meet the fitness needs of all our clients, and enable them to achieve all their fitness goals.
15 May 2009 - The Obesity Epidemic
Have you noticed that there is an epidemic out there (and I am not talking swine flu)?  The number of obese people in the UK and the rest of Europe is growing fast. If you don't believe me, then take a good look around the next time that you are out. I promise that you will be shocked.  The number of overweight and unfit people in Brighton and Hove is appalling.
1 May 2009 - Happy Birthday
Happy Birthday to us - Brighton Bootcamp is now one year old.

One year ago, Diana and I took a leap into the unknown by deciding to set up a fitness training company that delivered results. I have been in the fitness industry for many years and have seen people struggling to get results doing the same old thing. They were following ineffective training routines and not working with any real intensity or passion, but through it all I always had a dream of something better, something that delivered great results.

15 April 2009 - The Top 5 Side Effects of Exercise
I hope that you have all had a great Easter, but not too many chocolate eggs.

I would like to congratulate all those people who have just completed their six week intensive course. Special mention goes to Alison who has just lost another 15 pounds, taking her to a total weight loss of 33 pounds in twelve weeks. But also congratulations to Katie who lost 7 pounds in six weeks, Keren 22 pounds since October, Rosie 6 pounds in six weeks, Keith a total of 14 pounds in twelve weeks, Emma 10 pounds in six weeks, Sandra 9 pounds and Kathryn who has lost an amazing 24 pounds in five months with an insulin problem which slows her weight loss.

1 April 2009 - Vampires and Haters
Today I want to talk about vampires and haters.

I assume that most of you are like me, you have dreams and ambitions, you set goals and work hard to achieve them.

15 March 2009 - Surviving or Thriving?
I have a question for you – are you surviving or thriving?

Survivors go through their lives accepting their lot, never working to improve themselves. They eat bad food and drink regularly, they hardly ever exercise and if they do, they are never consistent. They always say, ‘I’ll start exercising tomorrow, I’ll start that diet next week, I’ll give up smoking soon’ and they are always complaining about how their life is so much more difficult than every one else’s. They are always tired, lethargic, depressed, fed up and bored. They go through their lives without direction and purpose just accepting their failures and making excuses as to why they cannot do something.

1 March 2009 - The Blame Game
So spring is around the corner and as it warms up we all begin to wear less clothing, but how many of you actually feel comfortable revealing your bodies? As spring/summer arrives people of all shapes and sizes begin to exercise in the hope that they will lose weight, shape up, look better, fit into their swimwear etc, etc, etc…..! But for whatever reason most will fail, which is a shame because with the right approach it actually is possible to achieve your best body. With regular intensive exercise and a structured nutrition plan it is possible to shed body fat at a fast rate.
15 February 2009 - The Wii Fit Conspiracy
Do you drink alcohol and if so how much? There have been plenty of press reports about binge drinking and how we have become a nation of drinkers. Personally, I very rarely drink alcohol, which is not just a health decision but the fact that I do not feel the need. I can go months without a drink, but when I do fancy a drink I always feel satisfied with one or two. One of the things that I fail to understand is ...
1 February 2009 - Falling Off the Wagon
Do you work out to lose weight, but find that it just isn’t happening? Then maybe you need to look at your nutrition.

Most people do not seem to realise that to lose weight takes approximately 70% nutrition and 30% exercise. Yes, you can lose weight with only one or the other, but it is a lot harder. When you combine a good nutrition plan with an exercise programme designed to blast fat, you turn your body into a fat burning machine. While it would take a whole book to cover everything that you need to know about nutrition, I have listed a few of my top tips to help you get started

15 January 2009 - 7 Fat Loss Myths
I hope you are training hard, working towards your goal of being the fittest healthiest and leanest that you have ever been. But if you haven’t started yet, why not? Every day that you waste by not exercising makes it harder to re-start. If you haven’t exercised for a while, then yes, you will be uncomfortable, sore and tired. But with consistency and patience it will get easier - remember that the benefits of a fit and healthy body far outweigh the negatives.
1 January 2009 - New Years Resolutions
Well here we are in 2009 already. So did you overindulge at Christmas?

So if you put your fitness on hold and overdid the treats, then what are you going to do now?

15 December 2008 - Do You Do This?
Christmas is just around the corner, and I am sure most of you are looking forward to spending quality time with your loved ones. You will also be overwhelmed by all the rich calorie dense food and alcohol on offer. But what do you do? You want to stay fit and lean, but the sight of all those mince pies, chocolates, cheese and biscuits, beers etc…leaves you with cravings that can be too much of a temptation.
1 December 2008 - The Abuse Stops Here
We are now in the final month of 2008 and did you achieve all your fitness goals during the year? Did you make a New Years resolution and stick to it? But if you didn’t, then why not?
15 November 2008 - Who's Pulling You Down?
I have a question for you, why is it that when some people come to me for training and nutrition advice they always seem to have a reason or excuse for why they cannot implement my recommendations?
1 November 2008 - The Storm is Coming
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate two clients who have just recently completed my six-week intensive course. They both put in tremendous effort over the last six weeks and have achieved amazing results. Kerry lost 10 pounds and reduced her body fat by an astonishing 5% in just six weeks, and Victoria lost 13 pounds and also an incredible 3.5% body fat.
15 October 2008 - The Magic Pill
Here we are into autumn and suddenly the sun comes out, but it won’t be that way for long. So my question to you is this, will you hibernate and lay down those fat stores for winter, or will you stick to your exercise program and keep striving for physical and mental perfection?
1 October 2008 - That's Too Easy
In the last newsletter I talked about diet and nutrition and how you can eat to elevate your metabolism. Today I am going to talk about using exercise to reach the same goal.
15 September 2008 - A Little Confusion is Good
Did you know that as a personal trainer the question I am asked most often is ‘how do I lose weight quickly?’ Most people assume that they must consume fewer calories, so they start dieting.
1 September 2008 - 5 Weight Loss Myths
I hope your exercise programme is reaping the benefits, but if not, why not?

Our last newsletter had a great article on making S.M.A.R.T goals, which for some people will be really helpful. But there are still people who for all the goals they set still fail to reach them. The reasons for this are numerous ...

15 August 2008 - Train like an Olympian
Welcome to the new issue of the Brighton Bootcamp newsletter. I hope all your training sessions are going well and there have not been any setbacks. That brings me to my thought for the day. My wife, Diana, has been training very hard lately and achieving some amazing results, in fact she has lost 14 pounds in the last six weeks. But at the beginning of the week she strained her calf and achilles, so is limping around at the moment.
1 August 2008 - Use it or Lose it
Summer has finally arrived and brings with it much more activity on the Lawns, especially on Monday evenings as visitors make a long weekend of it. This means we may not always be able to use "our" Lawn, depending on the positioning of people's barbecues/tents/football games. Fear not! Watch out for the Bootcamp banner on neighbouring Lawns and we will be beneath it. Remember, I don't need lots of space for an effective workout but I do need to protect you from footballs and the smell of burning sausages!
15 July 2008 - Don't Get Fat on Holiday
A summer trip is easily one of the most anticipated events of the year-the chance to get away from work and to relax with your loved ones is priceless.
